Tyler Locke Week 4
I spent some more time in the cath lab this week, shadowing some structural/valve procedures with Dr. Riesman/Dr.Chen in interventional cardiology as well as Dr. Goldberg in Cardiothoracic surgery. The most interesting case I saw this week was a transcatheter mitral valve repair using an Abbott Mitraclip. Dr. Riesman took some time to show Anna and I the imaging and explained the indications for the procedure, which involved using a small clip to hold the mitral valve leaflets together, helping them close. It was a long procedure, and they ended up placing 2 clips before they were satisfied with the result. Before this procedure, the patient was dependent on an aortic balloon pump, and was too sick to undergo cardiac surgery. The transcatheter procedure allowed them to gain some quality of life without the major risks associated with a surgical valve repair.
