Week 6 Summary
I started week 6 by learning how to section tissue blocks. I learned that the blocks needed to be kept cold before sectioning and placed in the same orientation on the slicer. I also learned to use microscope to check slides that have been stained before submitting them for scanning. On Tuesday, I attended a fascinating talk by Dr. Spector. He discussed the concepts, techniques, and significance of plastic surgery. He presented a variety of cases and also pointed up the innovations, challenges, and future directions in the field of plastic surgery. On Wednesday, I practiced flow cytometry data analysis. I learned that gating strategies are important for accurately identifying targeting cell populations within a sample. On Thursday, I met with on lab member to learn her project on investigating the role of mast cells in lymphedema disease develop. On Friday, I passaged lymphatic endothelial cells.
This week was heavily lab focused. I have gained a better understanding on the procedures involved in flow cytometry experiments and the handling of tissue samples. I also learned the tricky process of sectioning tissues and transferring them onto slides.
