Rachel Matthews - Dr. Gauthier- Week 6
This week, I was only able to shadow a single plastic surgery procedure due to changes in the surgery schedule. The patient had a traumatic arm amputation, and this procedure was a reconstruction of the residual limb. The surgeons worked in two teams, one to retrieve a skin graft from the thigh and the other to remove a portion of an abnormal nerve in the residual limb. The team on the leg used a special device to scrape off the top layer of the skin used to cover the surgical site on the residual limb. The skin grafts took longer than expected because the blade they first used needed to be replaced to ensure a continuous piece of tissue. Once the tissue was collected, it was prepared to be placed over the incision site in the residual limb.
For research, I finished processing the images and getting the lesion masks for the corresponding MRI images. Additionally, I have been compiling the differences between the two pipelines and looking into different ways to quantify the differences between the two pipelines. Additionally, I began looking into the other pipelines we wanted to test.
