Omar Dervisevic - Dr. Bostrom - Week 4
This week was another week mainly focused on shadowing the Dr. Bostrom in the clinic. On Monday I was able to observe many more surgeries. These surgeries were interesting because they were more focused on using a computer assisted approach to the knee and hip replacements. With the computer-assistance the ideal angles and positions of the prosthesis can be found before the operation making the procedures more tailored to the patient. The following day was another day in the clinic seeing patients and observing how certain decisions are made for specific patients. Wednesday was an OR day that had a total knee revision. This operation is one in which a previous implant had to be removed and a new one fitted. This procedure was significantly longer than the primary total knee replacements but was much more interesting. Thursday I started in the clinic and then went to the lab to continue working on my project. Friday was a lab day with a focus on annotating my sample images to teach the model what the different parts of the joint are.
