Jenny Deng-Dr.Spector-Week 5: Rat Tail Collagen Making

In this week’s didactic meeting, there was a “photo conference” where residents presented images on cases they’ve seen this week to attendings and doctors. The purpose was to provide background on the case, what they took note of, and the treatment offered. It was interesting to hear Dr. Jacoby question the students on how they arrived at their judgement. Some of the cases included a scalp flap, finger abscess cross-leg flap/ALT flap, and septoplasty.

In Dr. Spector’s clinic, I saw a patient get fluid drained from their back, a patient come in for aesthetic consultation, and a post-op patient from last week that received ear reconstruction. In this week’s OR, Dr. Spector was operating on a patient with a deviated septum  while also aiming to meet their aesthetic goals.

In lab this week, I began learning how to make collagen from rat tails. Xue taught the four of us following Dr. Spector how the lab extracts the tendons from the rat tails and how they’re processed. She also taught us how to clean up the tendons before immersing them in acetic acid for at least 48 hours.
