India Dykes - Dr. Spector - Week 6

 My work in the lab this week focused on developing 3D designs and models of custom bioprinter parts. I verified that the parts fit together using my technical drawings and printed them using the lab's 3D printer. I then assembled the printed parts and the hardware parts that I previously ordered. I am still waiting for a few parts to arrive and then I can finish the hardware assembly.

Additionally, I attended Dr. Spector's clinic hours with Julia where we observed a variety of consultations and follow ups. These included a post-op follow ups for a tummy tuck, several skin grafts, a patient with calcinosis, and a patient with a jaw reconstruction who was bothered by hair growing in his mouth from the leg flap that had been used for reconstruction.

Me, Faith, Julia, and India met Dr. Jason Spector on the first day. He was welcoming and enthusiastic to have us shadow him and work in his lab. We met Sophia and Dr. Xue Dong from his research side and Dr. Jaime Bernstein and Dr. Ann Ni on the surgical side. The next day, we were invited to see a case Dr. Spector was in. Cory Knox - Dr. Liston - Week 1

 After settling into our dorms at Lasdon, we were greeted by Carly and Kelly with a warm welcome and orientation to the hospital. The environment was fast paced and exciting - paired with seeing everyone in their business attire and enjoying a bagel breakfast, it was a fun way to start the week. We also had the opportunity to meet Dr. Min and Dr. Sabuncu, who shared with us their professional stories, and of course recommendations for things to do in the city. It was especially exciting to hear about Dr. Min's career and how he became the Chair of Radiology, as a person of color and someone who takes exciting risks that have led to his success today.  I was also able to meet with Dr. Liston's lab this week through one-on-ones and attending their weekly lab meeting. India Dykes - Dr. Spector - Weeks 7 & 8

 For the last two weeks of immersion I wrapped up the bioprinter conversion project and spent some time in Dr. Spector's clinic for office hours. In the clinic, we observed an eyelid lift consultation and a liposuction patient follow-up. We also saw a patient who had a large abdominal hernia that had been increasing in size over the past 4 years that needed to be repaired. Dr. Spector showed us the MRI of the hernia that showed the intestines extending beyond the abdominal wall. In the lab I successfully completed the bioprinter hardware build which included customizing several iterations of prototypes before finalizing the design and flashing the custom bioprinter firmware onto the Prusa board. In the future the bioprinter will be used in Dr. Spector's lab for 3D printing custom collagen breast cancer models and vascularized adipose tissue platforms.
