Faith Muriuki - Dr. Spector - Week 5

 7/1/2024 - 7/5/2024

The week started off with clinicals. Dr. Spector once again had back-to-back appointments. After the clinicals, I went back to the lab, where I learned how to make collagen from rat tails. This was day 1 of the process, so we spent hours unrolling the skin and separating the tendon from actual rat tails. It was an extremely physically demanding process that was oddly satisfying at the same time. I processed five rat tails in the span of about 3 hours. The tendons were then left to soak in acetic acid for the rest of the week.

On Tuesday, we had the weekly morning meeting. During the meeting, we discussed how the immersion process was going for everyone. Besides that, the rest of the week was spent going to the OR. This week really showcased the variability of the OR. One day, Jenny and I went to the OR with the intent of seeing a knee surgery, but when we entered the operating room where the knee surgery was supposed to occur, we discovered Dr. Spector was doing a rhinoplasty. I found it hilarious and coincidental to unexpectedly run into my clinical mentor.
