Chelsea Loh - Dr. Johnathan Weinsaft - Week 5

 Week 5

July 1 - July 5

Dr. Weinsaft introduced me to some ultrasound technicians during my 5th week of immersion. I observed cardiac, carotid, lower arterial, and leg venous ultrasounds. For vascular ultrasounds, the probe is first placed to view structures on the transverse axis (perpendicular cross section), then the probe is turned 90 degrees to obtain the longitudinal axis, parallel to structures. The color view can be turned on to observe the direction of blood. Ultrasounds can also determine the velocity of blood through blood vessels. Some of the technicians allowed me to scan their carotid arteries with the ultrasound machine! This hands-on experience allowed me to better understand the technical aspect to obtain good images. Frequency, brightness, and resolution play a large role in getting clear scans. For example, the technician asked the patient to breathe in/out slowly so that the lungs weren't blocking the view of a cardiac image, for better resolution.
