Omar Dervisevic/Dr. Bostrom - Week 1
This first week of the Immersion term was one of paperwork and acclimation. Orientation was very helpful in expressing the requirements for the summer, getting a layout of the hospital, and of course meeting Carly Skudin and Dr. Kelly Gillen. We were able to obtain our IDs and hospital access after the orientation. Following this I took the time to go to The Hospital for Special Surgery to receive my ID there since my clinician for this summer is Dr. Mathias Bostrom, an orthopedic surgeon specializing in knee and hip replacements. At the first weekly check in we meet Dr. Robert Min, who gave us a bunch of tips on immersion and stuff to do in NYC.
This week was the followed by scheduling meetings with Dr. Bostrom, a collaborator of my lab in Dr. Miguel Otero, and the lab manager Dr. Xu Yang. With these meetings I was able to foster a new collaboration project with Dr. Otero, meet with Dr. Yang and observe an animal surgery that is done as a part of the preclinical research done in the lab, and set up a meeting with Dr. Bostrom to speak about the expectations regarding research and clinical shadowing. With all of this I am excited to start my clinical shadowing and work see how the research that I doing could positively impact the healthcare of patients.
