Nusrat Binta Nizam/Dr. Ashley Beecy - Week 01
6/3/24 - 6/7/24 Week 1:
The starting of the summer immersion was really great for me. My clinical mentor is Dr. Ashley Beecy. I had a meeting with her before coming here for my immersion. She gave me an overall idea about the opportunities. As I am working with medical imaging and heart failure. We decided to focus on observing the patients of heart failure and have an idea about the imaging technologies and interpretation of the images.
On the first day of immersion, we began with an orientation session. Following this on next day, we had our first weekly meeting. After that, Dr. Beecy arranged for me to have an ECHO reading session with Dr. Arun. In the afternoon, I attended this session, where I learnt how radiologists examine echocardiogram images to calculate the Left Ventricular Ejection Fraction (LVEF). Dr. Arun also explained other important ECHO-derived variables that are crucial for diagnosis. During the session, I observed only abnormal cases and images showing structural abnormalities. They demonstrated how the intensity of the diseased condition can be assessed using Doppler images.
For the remainder of the week, I was assigned to shadow Dr. Alishetti in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in the morning (Wednesday - Thursday). I closely observed how they analyzed various vitals and imaging reports to assess the patients' conditions. During rounds with Dr. Alishetti, he introduced me to the different devices used in the ICU and explained their functions. He also discussed the conditions and symptoms of the patients with me. This experience provided me with a comprehensive overview of the symptoms of heart failure and a foundational understanding of the diagnostic approaches used in the ICU.
Dr. Beecy has scheduled a session for me in the next Monday morning to join her team on consults. It will be a great learning opportunity for me. I am looking forward to it.
