Josette Vigil/Dr. Scott Rodeo - Week 1
This week we got acclimated to our new housing and routines in NYC! Orientation was a good way to get to know other immersion students I hadn't previously met, explore the hospital, and learn a bit about the clinicians and staff we'll be working with this summer. I met Carly Skudin and Dr. Kelly Gillen, who helped us obtain hospital access and get our bearings in the immersion program. During our first weekly check-in meeting we got to meet Dr. Robert Min and Dr. Mert Sabuncu, who gave us lots of recommendations for both the immersion program and living in the city. This week I spent most of my time completing relevant healthcare and privacy trainings, connecting with my Dr. Scott Rodeo, and getting comfortable navigating the Hospital for Special Surgeries (HSS).
Additionally, I took some time this week to dive deeper into some of the relevant publications from Dr. Scott Rodeo's lab to prepare for my own project and the clinical work I'll be exposed to this summer. Since my thesis work is focused on tendinopathy, I focused largely on this body of Dr. Rodeo's work. I learned a lot about rotator cuff tears in both animal models and the operating room. With this background, I am excited to begin my clinical shadowing next week, and see how this research directly applies to patient care.
