Jenny Deng Week 2: Clinic with Dr. Spector and Observing other Clinicians

This week, I observed Dr. Spector in clinic. It was interesting to see a patient from last week come in for a post-op visit, to hear what patients think of their results, to see a potential patient talk about their concerns and the possible treatment options, and to see a patient inquire about a concern and receive a non-surgical treatment (botox) the same day.

I observed Dr. Spector in the OR for a fat graft procedure. It was interesting to see how deep the liposuction cannula needed to reach and how much lipoaspirate was removed from the body. On scene processing of the lipoaspirate removed as much tumescence fluid as possible, concentrating adipose-tissue-derived stem cells (ASCs) for re-introduction into the body.

I also observed Dr. Gfrerer in the OR for some mastectomy cases. Austin was in one of these cases and was again very helpful in explaining what was happening as the cases proceeded. In one of the cases, a tissue expander was inserted in the breast as a placeholder so that the patient could determine downstream if they wanted a more permanent implant later. He showed us a magnetic detector used in clinic post-op where the clinician can use it to find the metal rim of the injection site of the tissue expander. This tissue expander can be injected with saline into the desired volume. In closing up one of the cases, I got to see a decellularized cadaver matrix used to dress the wound.

Finally in the OR this week, I got to see Dr. Lin from the gynecology department use the Da Vinci machine in a robot assisted laparoscopic hysterectomy. Dr. Lin sat in a little alcove, a little removed from the 4-armed Da Vinci machine, and communicated with his team over microphone. It was fascinating to see the internal reproductive organs on screen and the Da Vinci surgical arms as they resected the tissue.

In lab, I got to talk to Dr. Spector's students, Sophia and Xue, about potential for incorporating spheroid models into some of their systems. I also met new students Abby and Kala this week.

Lipoaspirate contains ASCs.
