India Dykes - Dr. Spector - Week 2

This was another busy week of clinical experiences. On Monday I observed a VY hamstring advancement for the repair of a sacral pressure ulcer.

On Tuesday I observed a nipple-sparing bilateral mastectomy where Dr. Gfrerer reconstructed the nerve to the nipple using an intercostal nerve autograft. Dr. Spector's PA, Ann Ni, also showed us how to do some simple sutures.

On Wednesday I observed a robotic-assisted hysterectomy using the DaVinci robot. The patient carried a BRCA1 gene variant that predisposed them to developing cancer so they were undergoing a prophylactic bilateral mastectomy and hysterectomy.
Thursday was a clinic day where Julia and I observed several follow-up appointments for the patients we had seen in the OR the previous week as well as a consultation for a breast reconstruction for a mastectomy patient and a Juvederm (hyaluronic acid) injection to enhance a patients jaw line. On Thursday we were also able to collect a blood sample and isolate the red blood cells using a centrifuge. Julia and I then tested the red blood cells in the syringe-based impedance sensor from the Bonassar lab to see if we could measure the concentration and viability of the cells.
