Clara Marlowe - Dr. Pua - Week 2

The second week of immersion was okay. Monday, Dr. Pua had an all day research retreat to discuss logistics and project goals for the Center for Intelligent Image Guided (CI3) procedures. This meeting gave me more insight into what projects are ongoing and how I might be able to contribute. Most of the projects are outside of the scope of anything I have experience with (it's a lot of computational work and software development). I'm hoping that perhaps I can learn some new skills from these because AI in healthcare is the future. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, I shadowed Keara, a nurse practitioner and was able to watch a few minimally invasive procedures with Dr. Jeff Sung, Dr. Brian Currie, Dr. Tim McClure, and Dr. Sophia McKenney. I shadowed a lymphangioplasty and a biopsy. I also participated in the Colman Inclusive Leadership program this week where I learned my strengths and weaknesses as a leader. I feel excited and motivated to apply what I learned throughout my PhD. This program was pretty time demanding however, so I wasn't able to spend as much time in the hospital this week as I would have liked.

While speaking with Dr. McClure, he highlighted current challenges in prostate cancer treatment and shared his ideas for improving these treatments. His idea involves local delivery of androgenic blockers to the prostate which would block testosterone from binding without systemic side effects. Since my research is in localized drug delivery, I'm excited to explore this topic further and potentially curate a collaboration with my lab! I was also speaking to Dr. McKenney who is an MD PhD starting her own lab later this year. Her research is in translation oncology which is another area I have interest in, so I'm excited to continue speaking with her.
