Chelsea Loh - Dr. Johnathan Weinsaft

6/3/24 - 6/7/24

I spent my first week of summer immersion experiencing clinical work for the first time, and taking in the electric essence of NYC!

Carly Skudin and Dr. Kelly Gillen met with us Monday morning to discuss the general outline of immersion. Carly also took us to obtain our ID badges and gave us a brief tour of medical college. After orientation, I was introduced to Dr. Johnathan Weinsaft's research team, who I will be working with this summer.

Drs. Min, Wang, Sabuncu, and Prince welcomed us to the program on Tuesday morning. These meetings will be held weekly, every Tuesday morning, to discuss our research progress and the work we have shadowed. Later that afternoon, I completed the required trainings, shadowed Dr. Weinsaft's research team as they obtained patient consent for participation in a study, and learned the basics of MRI procedures.

On Wednesday, I observed another MRI procedure done on a French speaking patient. The technicians programmed the MRI machine to deliver French instructions, and conversed via a French translator. It is beneficial to have such communication methods for both patients and providers.

Throughout Thursday, I shadowed a cardiology fellow who treated congenital heart disease patients in the clinic. I learned the difference between the role of a fellow and an attending physician. From what I observed, a fellow is under supervision of their attending. I shadowed Dr. Udhay Krishnan, an advanced heart failure physician, today in the clinic.

Starting next week, I will be shadowing Dr. Krishnan, and hope to start analyzing MRI images with Dr. Weinsaft's team.
