Chelsea Loh - Dr. Johnathan Weinsaft - Week 3

This week I shadowed physicians in the Cardiac Care Unit (CCU). I learned the difference between transitional and destination therapies. A balloon pump, for example, is a transitional therapy. It would be difficult for a patient with a balloon pump to perform activities as the patient is required to lie flat. A destination therapy, such as a Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD), is an implantable device that is used as a permanent treatment. I also learned what a code status is and the medical care a patient's team is to provide in the event of cardiac arrest, such as a Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) order. I followed clinicians as they went on rounds, discussed updates on patients and their care plan. 

The rest of the week was spent continuing my research project. I have been getting better at analyzing cardiac MRI images. Our cohort had a meeting with Dr. Yi Wang to discuss our clinical progress, and attended our weekly Tuesday seminar on the role of mentors and mentees.

Me, Faith, Julia, and India met Dr. Jason Spector on the first day. He was welcoming and enthusiastic to have us shadow him and work in his lab. We met Sophia and Dr. Xue Dong from his research side and Dr. Jaime Bernstein and Dr. Ann Ni on the surgical side. The next day, we were invited to see a case Dr. Spector was in. This would be my first time in the operating room. For this particular case, a radial forearm flap was being utilized to reconstruct part of a tongue that was partially resected due to oral carcinoma. The ENT team were operating near the head and the plastic surgery team by the arm. It was less bloody than anticipated. A large Zeiss microscope was rolled into the OR for the microsurgery portion that required joining the donor and recipient site blood supply. Cory Knox - Dr. Liston - Week 1

 After settling into our dorms at Lasdon, we were greeted by Carly and Kelly with a warm welcome and orientation to the hospital. The environment was fast paced and exciting - paired with seeing everyone in their business attire and enjoying a bagel breakfast, it was a fun way to start the week. We also had the opportunity to meet Dr. Min and Dr. Sabuncu, who shared with us their professional stories, and of course recommendations for things to do in the city. It was especially exciting to hear about Dr. Min's career and how he became the Chair of Radiology, as a person of color and someone who takes exciting risks that have led to his success today.  I was also able to meet with Dr. Liston's lab this week through one-on-ones and attending their weekly lab meeting. India Dykes - Dr. Spector - Weeks 7 & 8

 For the last two weeks of immersion I wrapped up the bioprinter conversion project and spent some time in Dr. Spector's clinic for office hours. In the clinic, we observed an eyelid lift consultation and a liposuction patient follow-up. We also saw a patient who had a large abdominal hernia that had been increasing in size over the past 4 years that needed to be repaired. Dr. Spector showed us the MRI of the hernia that showed the intestines extending beyond the abdominal wall. In the lab I successfully completed the bioprinter hardware build which included customizing several iterations of prototypes before finalizing the design and flashing the custom bioprinter firmware onto the Prusa board. In the future the bioprinter will be used in Dr. Spector's lab for 3D printing custom collagen breast cancer models and vascularized adipose tissue platforms.
